Operators with national networks often want cars from Christchurch to be returned to Auckland because most renters travel in the opposite direction, so you may find a cheaper price on a northbound route.

Christchurch’s Metro bus network is inexpensive, efficient and comprehensive. Most buses run from the inner-city Bus Interchange.

Pick up timetables from the i-SITE or the Interchange. Tickets (adult/child $4/2) can be purchased on board and include one free transfer within two hours. Alternatively, Metrocards allow unlimited travel for two hours/one day/one week for $2.55/5.10/25.50. Cards are available from the Interchange; they cost $10 and must be loaded with a minimum of $10 additional credit.
