San Francisco (Saint Francis) was founded in 1776, when Presidio of San Francisco was established by Spanish colonists at the Golden Gate. In 1849 The California Gold Rush brought a lot of growth and made it the largest city on the entire West Coast. In 1856 San Francisco became a consolidated city-county. It survived the 1906 earthquake that destroyed nearly three-quarters of the city and was quickly rebuilt. Panama-Pacific International Exposition was hosted in San Francisco just nine years after the quake. During the World War II, the San Francisco port was the port of embarkation for those service members who were heading to the Pacific Theatre. After the war, the combination of substantial immigration, returning servicemen, liberalizing attitudes and the growth of the ‘hippie’ culture, the Peace Movement, Sexual Revolution and other factors brought the Summer of Love, making San Francisco the heart of liberal activism in the country. Since the dot-com and social media boom, the city became popular for tech companies and professionals.

San Francisco is a melting pot of cultures. The city has a large number of museums, theatres and live performance venues. Since the climate is ideal for outdoor activities, the city has ample resources for sports and recreation. In fact, the residents of San Francisco are often ranked among the fittest in America. The diversity in the population has made it possible to find the food from any corner of the world in the city. There are numerous festivals and fairs throughout the year that are held in celebration of food, dance, music, drinks and more.

San Francisco has a population of 864,816 and because of its small size – it’s the second-most densely populated major city in America (after New York). The people come from various ethnic backgrounds. Majority of the residents are Whites (48%), followed by Asians (33%), Hispanic or Latino (15%), African Americans (6%) and others. The people work in various sectors like finance, tourism, information technology, education, healthcare, etc. The residents call themselves ‘San Franciscans’ – they are helpful and friendly.
