Zagreb

While Croatia in general offers a rather narrow choice of cuisines (predominantly traditional and local), in Zagreb the selection is far more varied. Besides the region’s hearty meat dishes, you’ll encounter a new wave of up-and-coming young chefs, who create contemporary dishes by reinterpreting traditional recipes with a refined touch. Pizzerias remain the most common types of casual dining spots around the city, and Croatian pizza is remarkably good and inexpensive, but restaurants offering a wide range of ethnic cuisines (Thai, Istrian, Bosnian, Mexican, Middle Eastern) are making inroads. Traditional fast food is the Bosnian burek (phyllo pastry filled with either cheese or meat), though there are also kiosks vending pizza by the slice and baguette sandwiches. For sweets, the city’s ubiquitous cafés and slastičarnicas (ice-cream/pastry shops) provide indulgent treats.
