MUSEUMS

Salzburg Fortress

Locals go there to learn about the history of the fortress, to learn about the archbishops in Salzburg and around the christmas time to visit the christmas market there. In the summer time some locals go up there to eat there, drink a coffee or just for the views.

Mozart’s Birthplace

The house where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27th, 1756, includes the rooms once occupied by the Mozart family and a museum displaying numerous interesting mementos, including the young Mozart’s violin, portraits, and original scores of his compositions. Engaging exhibits introduce his family members and their life and explore his operatic works, with costumes, set designs, and models and excerpts from his operas. One room is furnished as it would have been in his time.

Hallein and the Celtic Museum

The old Celtic town of Hallein on the River Salzach, a ten-minute-drive from Salzburg city center, is one of the several interesting places to visit near Salzburg, for its picturesque narrow streets, gateways, and statues, as well as the historic homes built in typical Salzach style. Hallein is the birthplace of organist Franz Xaver Gruber, composer of Silent Night.

DomQuartier Salzburg

It is the best museum to see the decadent and powerful life of the archbishops that ruled Salzburg for centuries. It shows how much power they really had and how they showed off their wealth. During this museum you will also see the organ of the Dom of Salzburg and enjoy to see this church from the upper floor.

Hangar-7

The building is in itself rather futuristic, and is a great place to watch planes take off from and land in Salzburg airport. Entrance is completely free and you can look at Red Bull’s collection of airplanes, helicopters and Formula 1 cars.

PARKS

Mirabell Gardens

This garden is studded with statues and reflecting pools. Von Erlach also designed some of the marble balustrades and urns. There’s a natural theater as well. For the best view of the gardens and also of Salzburg, pause at the top of the steps where Julie Andrews and her seven charges showed off their singing voices in The Sound of Music. As you wander in the gardens, be sure to visit Zwerglgarten, the bastion with fantastic marble baroque dwarfs and other figures. It’s located by the Pegasus Fountains in the lavish garden west of Schloss Mirabell. From the garden, you have an excellent view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. The marble statues make Mirabell Gardens virtually an open-air museum.
