Salzburg Festival
The absolute highlight of the city’s events calendar is the Salzburg Festival. It’s a grand affair, with some 200 productions – including theatre, classical music and opera – staged in the impressive surrounds of the Grosses Festpielhaus, Haus für Mozart and the baroque Felsenreitschule. Tickets vary in price between €11 and €430; book well ahead.
Christkindlmarkt
Salzburg is at its story-book best during Advent, when Christmas markets bring festive sparkle and choirs to Domplatz and Residenzplatz, starting in late November.
Osterfestspiele
This springtime shindig brings orchestral highlights, under Christian Thielemann’s sprightly baton, to the Festpielhaus, as well as choral concerts and opera (Tosca was staged in 2018).
Jazz & the City
Salzburg gets its groove on at some 100 free concerts in the Altstadt in late October, held at cafes, bars and hotels across town. See the website for venue details.
SommerSzene
Boundary-crossing performing arts – including cutting-edge dance, plays, film, visual arts and DJ sets – are the focus of this event held for 11 days in June.
Mozartwoche
World-renowned orchestras, conductors and soloists celebrate Mozart’s birthday with an 11-day feast of his music in late January.
