Bicycle

Both Mobike and ofo offer dockless bike sharing through their apps. Alternatively, BikeMi is a public bicycle system with stops all over town. Subscribe and register for all services online or through their apps. For BikeMi you can also register at the ATM Info Point at the Duomo, Cadorna or Centrale metro stops.

Car & Motorcycle

It simply isn’t worth having a car in Milan. Many streets have restricted access and parking is a nightmare. A congestion zone, Area C, is now enforced in the city centre between 7.30am and 7.30pm Monday to Wednesday and Friday (to 6pm on Thursday). To enter you need to buy a daily pass (€5) at www.muoversi.milano.it. In the centre, street parking costs between €1.50 and €3 per hour. To pay, buy a SostaMilano card from a tobacconist, scratch off the date and hour, and display it on your dashboard. Underground car parks charge between €25 and €40 for 24 hours.

Metro

The metro consists of four major lines: M1 (red) connects Duomo with Porta Venezia, the castle, Corso Magenta and the Fiera; M2 (green) connects Porta Garibaldi with Brera and Navigli; M3 (yellow) connects the Quad with Porta Romana; and, M5 (lilac) connects San Siro with Porta Garibaldi and Isola. Work on the M4 (blue) line, which will eventually connect the city with Linate Airport, is well underway with a tentative completion date of 2020.

A ticket costs €1.50 and is valid for one metro ride. Tickets are sold at electronic ticket machines in the station, or at tobacconists and newsstands.

Taxi

Taxis cannot be hailed but must be picked up at designated ranks, usually outside train stations, large hotels and in major piazzas. You can call a cab on 02 40 40, 02 69 69 or 02 85 85.

Train

Milan’s public transport network includes a suburban rail line, the blue Passante Ferroviario, which serves the larger metropolitan area, including the trade fairground at Rho, Pavia and Saronno, from where you can connect with trains to Como. The main hubs are Porta Garibaldi and Cadorna.

Tram & Bus

ATM also oversees trams and an extensive bus network. Route maps are available from ATM info points, or download the ATM app. Tickets are sold at electronic ticket machines in the station, or at tobacconists and newsstands. A ticket costs €1.50 and is valid for 90 minutes on trams and buses. It must be validated when boarding.

Tram 1, which cuts through the historic centre, is a retro orange beauty with wooden benches and original fittings. Trams 2 and 3 are good for sightseeing, and trams 9 and 10 loop the whole way around the centre via Porta Venezia, Porta Genova and Porta Garibaldi.

Bus-based night services run every half-hour between 12.20am and 5.40am, when the metro is closed.
