Bicycle

Bicycles can be carried free on SL local trains as foldable ‘hand luggage’ only. They’re not allowed in Centralstationen or on the tunnelbana (metro), although you’ll occasionally see some daring souls.

Stockholm City Bikes Has self-service bicycle-hire stands across the city. Bikes can be borrowed for three-hour stretches and returned at any City Bikes stand. Purchase a bike card online or from the tourist office. Rechargeable season cards are valid April to October.

Boat

Djurgårdsfärjan city ferry services connect Gröna Lund Tivoli on Djurgården with Skeppsholmen and Slussen as frequently as every 10 minutes in summer; SL transport passes and tickets are valid on these services. Note that the ferry will only stop at Skeppsholmen on request; inform staff when boarding or, if waiting for the ferry on Skeppsholmen, press the button at the stop.

Bus

City buses are frequent, convenient and run by Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). Buses on major routes run around every four to six minutes during the day (every seven to nine minutes on weekends) and around every 15 minutes later in the evening. Most buses run until midnight, but check schedules. Timetables can be found at www.sl.se Tickets cannot be purchased on board. If using a rechargeable Access card, tap on when boarding the bus.

Car & Motorcycle

Driving in central Stockholm is not recommended. Narrow one-way streets, congested bridges and limited parking all present problems; note that Djurgårdsvägen is closed near Skansen at night, on summer weekends and some holidays. Do not attempt driving through the narrow streets of Gamla Stan.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available but fees are unregulated – be sure to check for a meter or arrange the fare first. Use one of the established, reputable firms, such as Taxi Stockholm or Sverige Taxi. The ride-sharing company Uber (www.uber.com) also covers Stockholm.

Train

Local trains (pendeltåg) are most useful for connections to Nynäshamn (for ferries to Gotland), Märsta (for buses to Sigtuna) and Uppsala (requires supplementary fee). Services depart from inside Centralstationen near the T-Centralen tunnelbana station.

Tram

The historic No 7 tram (and its sleek modern siblings) runs between Norrmalmstorg and Skansen, passing most attractions on Djurgården. SL passes are valid.

Tunnelbana

Stockholm’s metro, tunnelbana, connects its various neighbourhoods; it’s fast and efficient, although some stops are so close together that you might be better off walking, so check maps first.

There are three main lines: green, red and blue. Route maps are easy to navigate and posted at all stations.

Trains generally run around every 10 to 15 minutes from 5am to 1am. Trains also run roughly every 15 to 30 minutes through the night on Friday and Saturday; check schedules at www.sl.se.
